ILLUMINATE aims to not only raise funds towards a cure for the degenerative neurological condition, but also to educate and inform young people about its effect. This latest effort is being supported by a long list of top personalities, including Alesha Dixon, Kevin McCloud, Ricky Gervais and Sir Chris Hoy MBE, who have each designed and signed their own candle holder to throw light on the race for a cure. ILLUMINATE was started by campaigner Becky Hurd, who at the age of 29, newly married and looking forward to starting a family, was diagnosed with Parkinson’s. Speaking at the launch of the campaign, Becky commented, “It was devastating news which came completely out of the blue… but for the sake of my two year old daughter and wonderful husband, I am determined to do everything I can to make a difference and help find a cure.” Click here to see more about Becky’s ILLUMINATE campaign. |
Speaking about why she chose to get involved, Alesha Dixon remarked, “Becky Hurd's campaign to shine a light on the race for a cure is inspirational - Parkinson's is a debilitating disease, but the fact that there are so many studies working to find a cure is giving hope to the 120,000 people battling the condition across the UK. Now fingers crossed my candle holder raises a decent amount of money to support them!" |

Kevin McCloud, whose design depicts a snowflake, commented, “I wholeheartedly support the race for a cure for Parkinson’s, which affects one in every 500, regardless of age. I’m impressed by the collaboration that goes on between staff, volunteers, scientists and patients all working towards raising awareness of this debilitating neurological condition. It’s their passion which drives the momentum towards providing a cure, offering hope at last to those cruelly imprisoned in their bodies.” | |||||||
